When Annie's husband John dies from leukaemia at an early age, her close friend, Chris, wants to purchase a comfortable sofa for the visitors' lounge in the hospital where John was treated and raise some money for Leukaemia research. Blasting away all preconceptions of what it is to be in a women’s institute Chris hits upon the idea of printing a calendar featuring members of the Knapely branch of the Women's Institute, discreetly posing nude whilst engaged in traditional WI activities, such as baking and knitting. Her proposal is initially met with great scepticism, but she eventually convinces a group of ordinary women to participate in the project with her. Upturning preconceptions is a dangerous business and none of the ladies expect the emotional and personal ramifications they go through as a result but gradually the making of the calendar allows each woman to blossom, like a sunflower.
The musical, written by Tim Firth and Gary Barlow, is based on the true story of the Calendar Girls from a small Yorkshire village, who became a global phenomenon with the launch of their ‘artistic’ WI Calendar. With unforgettable songs, every performance continues to add to the millions already raised for charity and also prove that there is no such thing as an ordinary woman.
