Wed 14 - Sat 17 Mar 2018, Main Theatre Auditorium musicals
The story of Billy Bigelow and Julie Jordan is no ordinary boy-meets-girl love story. Set against the backdrop of a seemingly idyllic New England coastal town, their ill-fated romance is beset by unemployment, poverty and violence. When Billy dies after a bungled attempted robbery, he leaves Julie expecting their child. However, in the afterlife, Billy is given one last opportunity to do the right thing and the story ends with the uplifting affirmation that, however dark the past and uncertain the present, there is always hope for a brighter future.
With memorable music such as “If I Loved You”, “June Is Bustin’ Out All Over” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, Carousel is an all-time favourite. This contemporary production by Astwood Bank Operatic Society sets the action in the 1950s. The heart-wrenching story-line and rousing company numbers will have you reaching for the tissues and joyously toe-tapping in equal measure.
